How to stay ahead during the busy Summer Moving Season | Tips for HR and Global Mobility Professionals

Discover what the busy summer season in the relocation industry entails, the challenges it brings, and how HR and mobility professionals can effectively navigate this period with proactive planning and communication.

As we approach the beginning of summer, the relocation and household goods (HHG) industry is getting ready for its busiest time of the year. This surge in activity brings both excitement and challenges, requiring careful planning and proactive measures to ensure that the expectations and deadlines of transferees are met. In today’s blog post, we’ll explore what the summer busy season entails, the challenges that may be encountered, and what HR and mobility professionals can do to stay ahead of the curve.

The summer busy season is between May and September, it is the most common period for individuals and families to move. This is due to the warmer weather, school breaks, and lease agreements commonly ending on June 30th and July 31st. As a result of this increased demand, Relocation Management Companies (RMCs), moving companies, and others in the industry will be near or at capacity. This may make scheduling and finding available bookings for services difficult. To counteract this, we suggest giving your RMC, as much lead time as possible. For example, if you know you have an employee moving in August and it’s currently April, it’s best to initiate that move in April.

Tips for navigating busy moving season:

1. Plan ahead

As aforementioned, notify your RMC of upcoming moves as soon as possible to secure preferred moving dates and avoid last-minute scheduling conflicts.

2. Communicate clearly

Provide detailed information about employee relocations, including move dates, destination locations, and special requirements, to streamline the booking process and ensure accurate quotes.

3. Prioritize critical moves

Identify priority moves that require immediate attention, such as executive relocations or international assignments, and communicate their urgency to your RMC for expedited service.

4. Stay flexible

Recognize that the summer busy season may necessitate flexibility in scheduling and resource allocation. Be open to alternative moving dates or service options to accommodate evolving needs.

5. Monitor progress

Regularly communicate with your RMC to track the progress of pending moves, address any issues or concerns, and ensure the timely completion of relocation activities.
